Air Gunner

Air Gunner

On into the night four engines did drone

with a crew all chilled to the bone

Other planes alongside flew in formation

each man´s heart so filled with anticipation

From the perspex turret a gunner did stare

he sat secluded in his own little chair

The intercom cracked and then did the flak

would there be a chance of getting back

Searchlights probed the darkened sky

for many aircraft flying so high

Tracers flew into the night did sting

as cannons and rockets did also zing

A night fighter came into sight

out of the inky blue and concealing night

The guns spewed forth their deadly rhythm

the air gunner fought with such precision

Bombs soon loosed did tumble down

on an unsuspecting town

The gunner alert and relieved did pray

let´s soon be home and on our way

Martin, thank you for this. You are right it was inspired by the aircrews of many bombers who flew missions over Germany during the last World War. They possessed such immense courage. Thanks. Keith

This is an interesting perspective of a night bombing raid I presume from the second world war which makes it a good poem. Nice one Keith
