First Day at School

First Day at School

Four years old, timid and shy

I entered the playground for the very first time

My mother bade me a tearful farewell

as I stood awkwardly with tears beginning to well

Other children who were much older

were already at play as to begin their day

Two boys I saw were wearing clogs

they were scruffy and wore no socks

At speed they ran and then violently braked

and from their clogs made sparks fly out

I had a sense of fear and foreboding

which was interrupted by a hand bell tolling

Lines in strict uniformity were made

almost akin to a military parade

No one had spoken or recognised me

as we marched inside for wonders to see

Desks in rows with tiny ink wells and pens

each desk was chiselled with letters and signs

The teacher entered and silence was held

we stood to attention until we were told to sit

This was my first day at school and

I can´t say I was impressed with it

at least you can remember it Keith ? Clogs? Feels like we've stepped into a Lowry painting.
