gold stars

external validation
it's your drug of choice

it starts with
gold stars for
good behavior

the seed to please
it just grows and grows
into a wild jungle vine

gold stars turn into
compliments and "likes"
it feels so nice
but it's not

because you
need it
more and more
you have to
win the award

it controls you
and you don't
even know
who you
are anymore

Little Bit

i'm addressing everyone, including myself. ? it's very much a love-hate thing with the gold stars. i mean the whole reason that I write and create (and I think most people do) is to relate to other people, and you want to know if it struck a chord with someone. but it's easy to get too wrapped up in it and then it loses its goodness. always love hearing from you guys--thanks for reading! I'm debating whether or not to press the Like button LB? Oh what the heck here goes!

To add to Andy's comment, you could be addressing a very large percentage of online bloggers, selfie posters and tweeters. I think we can all relate or should think on this.

I'd give you a gold star sticker for this poem but I'm all out so my Like will have to do if that's okay?

I know this feeling; this need for validation. I can escape it sometimes but i can never deny its existence. I like the way you place the origin of the need in the desire for gold stars; 'the seed to please'', bang on, as we say round here.
Who are you addressing in the poem? Yourself?
