Thai Bride

entry picture

I know it's not my place to say

I could be talking out of turn

but after what I heard today

I have to tell you I'm concerned

we've known each other eighty years

since we were little boys at school

I don't want this to end in tears

and see an old friend look a fool

the landlord in the Linden Tree

said you'd returned from holiday

with your Thai bride called Charunee

who just turned twenty yesterday

you told him you had met online

two weeks before you went away

then married her in record time

and now you've brought her back to stay

you swear it's love but I'm not sure

remember back in '93

my Thai bride soon showed me the door -

you could at least have learned from me.

Paul, regardless of the pros and cons of these relationships, the poem reads beautifully. Nice one.

Hi Graham, thanks so much for your warm words about this poem. It's strange isn't it, how we can find humour even in sad subjects like this? Since I posted this I keep thinking of the Ting-Tong character in Little Britain ?

Sadly, I am aware via a transient friend that in Cyprus the largely Phillipino contingent of young ladies are colloquially known as "cleaners". A very sad affair in deed.

It would be good to read such a piece from the women's perspective as there seems to be no shortage of candidates, especially from the Eastern European countries.

A humorous but thought provoking piece Paul.

Thanks Jeff and Colin for your comments.

Jeff, I believe what you're saying about these being contracts and not about love.

Col, who was it that sang "some guys have all the luck?"

I had to collect something from a chap in town, he was an odd bloke, lumpy, middle aged, not very good looking, bit weird but nothing you could pin down. Anyways, next time I went there he wasn't around but his (I'm guessing) Thai bride was. She opened the front door in her dressing gown and by god she was good looking. Beyond that I have no further experience or knowledge of the subject matter so will naff orf and read someone else's poem ?

Working where I work I see this every week. I can't blame of judge either but I will say it's always a business contract, not a love one. Once the money is gone, so is the bride. No money, no honey & no passport, no assport.....I spent a few months in Thailand & step outside the tourist areas & it's a miserable life for most Thai girls. Like I say can't blame them, but it ain't love.......Jeff.....

Thanks Ray and Suki,

This came to mind after reading about lonely, older (and yes, Ray, probably wealthy) men who seek love wherever they can find it...and believe that women many years younger than them from countries like Thailand would seriously want to marry them.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with trying to find love in later life. And, for all I know, it might be a two-way street where the young ladies see it as an opportunity too good to miss, with the promise of a better life.

Honestly, the older I get the less I think I know or understand ?

Thanks again for reading and commenting. Paul

Hi Paul,

You might not wish for your poem to be read this way, but my thought was..good luck to her..

Looking like the guy in the photo, he must have been rich Paul. I can imagine the twenty year old all day long, but that's where it ends.

I'm curious where the eighty years stands up ! Sounds highly unstable to me.

A lovely read !

Ray
