Shadows Tall

It's a beautiful day, the sun shines bright.

No wind does blow, not a cloud in sight.

The summer holidays are now in full flow.

4 weeks off school and still 2 more to go!

But something is missing, not quite there.

No sound of children's laughter to fill the air.

No splashing sounds of paddling pool fun.

No ice creams melting under the warm sun.

Because when I was a boy that's what I recall.

We would play out all day, until shadows tall.

Dropped in at home to be watered and fed.

And Mum would call us in when time for bed!

Always a sense of freedom, of childhood glee

That's how my summers always seemed to be.

We made our own fun, boredom there was none.

But times have changed, those days seem gone.

Indoor games on computers, boxes and screens.

Are the preferred choice of today's kids and teens.

The streets seem empty of seeing many a game.

It’s a different era I know, but it still feels a shame.
