THE ENGLISH SEE

The English see what the English are

And - whilst rarely known to brag -

Know they're more by far than a jaundiced star

Stitched up on a made-up rag.

Stimulating observations - many thanks thus far.
There will always be minorities within majorities and
politics offer the surest way of addressing differences.
But the coming chance to change what has been
challenged is one of the most important decisions in
our history and I am confident that proven historic ability
to forge a fighting spirit will see us through should the
decision be "out". A contrary decision will not leave
us any opportunity to avoid whatever the forces of
federalism have in mind for the future and show us
here just what impotence in defining ourselves means
within the steamrolling reality that will undoubtedly come.

I`m with you on this one M.C..

Let those Taffys and Jocks speak for themselves :)

(If we leave the E.U. the Scots will be off like a rocket)

If - as some say - the ultimate E.U. aim is a pan- European state the obstacles would be enormous.

The only historically unitary things which the European states might have (faintly) in common would seem to be their distantly original common descent from the Roman empire, and their equally distant connections with an ancient Eastern or Latin Christianity which was itself split
by the Reformation.

I can`t see any of this having any effect whatsoever on the various Nationalisms which have developed since (and which have been mainly the causes of the wars we have endured.)

It might be said that the principles of the French Revolution might bind us together - but I doubt it.

The presence of Russia at the edge, with it`s recently economically collapsed form of Marxism and historic form
of Orthodox Christianity is an enigma. Its geographical
situation as part of the European land mass would seem
to make it a natural for future connection of some sort.

I`m sorry for going off a bit but your insistence made me think. If we`re eventually to `come together` where`s the glue?

"England expects..."
I have no compunction in putting forward a view as one
of the majority in the UK. Others (check the Scots) are
just as ready to speak out for their own origins and
aims. Indeed, their history makes no bones about
seeking allegiances beyond UK shores to further those aims.
In life, I'm as guilty as the next man of things of which
I am ashamed, but the fact that I am English within the
UK is not one of them.
