cholrine days

It probably went the way of the squash court

But in the 60’s summer of teenage heat

The swimming pool was

Bright welcoming and blue

Inviting you to enter

To break through

The tranquil undisturbed glass

Prepared and ready

A large aquamarine oblong bowl

Chlorine enhanced

A choking daring do

Of sanitised delight

Cool and refreshing on a hot hazy

June day

On that day

The day of the school inter house race

The splashing smooth rippling

Of moving bodies

Propelled through heaving swell

The urgent shouts of supporters

There were those like me

Who were quite fast

And then there were the few

Who light years ahead of the best

Would glide and slide

Through the water like dolphins

Hardly catching breath

But when all was quiet

The last light was switched off

And the school was finally put to rest

I expect the pool was like the squash court

Dull dirty vacant and lost

◄ Out driving

Under the bed ►

Thanks for your comments guys. I actually enjoyed swimming as a kid but I know what you mean about the sound of pattering feet on tiles Ray.
I remember the worst time for stinging eyes from cholrine was when our school caretaker put too much in the morning
probably why I don't like opening my eyes under water.

Just caught this fresh off the press, Martin. Everything makes sense to one who was actually scared of water, but felt compelled to visit such pools, which were of course common at one time. The atmosphere was unique - I can't forget the sound of pattering wet feet on tiles. The moments of launching and the facefuls of bracing spray, etc etc.

A refreshing and lovely poem.
