Oysters

Freshly cut grass and a whiff

of sea air - stung, tired city eyes

Heading for the field, we squelched our

way to the stalls

Huddled around the heat - waiting.

Hands clutched sticky pink candy

Men poked the charcoal and sharpened their prongs

“Are they ready?” I asked.

The rough hard shells, somersaulted; on the

hot bed of wire

Crackle - pop: My black trousers, speckled with salt.

Ketchup, Lemon or Mayonnaise

Delicate to touch, tingling my tongue:

swishing around and down past my tonsils

Hello Janet, Steve, Jane and Michael. Thank you so much for your comments. In answer to your question, yes, Oysters can be cooked on the Barbeque and they're delicious. Here in Japan they love Oysters and the festival I attended was by the seaside, and there was a rock band playing too :)). Thank you again for taking the time to read my effort.

Beachside tucker is cool. Havent been able to do it much but the few occasions I have, have been memorable. Never tried oysters though.

Hi Belinda,
Oysters. Yuck!!!
Horrible slimy things. How anyone can call them aphrodisiacs i honestly don't know. Prefer the champagne myself. :-)

Have i read this wrong only i never heard of oysters being cooked before.
Nice imagery and love the scents of cut grass and the barbecue charcoal adds a touch of warmth on what feels like a cool day beside the sea. :-)

Hi Belinda, a nice evocation of nice times by the seaside. Oysters, I love 'em. I used to work in Colchester and Whitstable - which are both big oyster towns
