The York's Prayer

The York’s Prayer

Our Dad, ‘oo art in Hebden,

Tha’s norra bad fella.

Tha’s County come,

Tha’s will be done,

On Earth as it is in Yorkshire.

Give us this day our daily barm-cake,

And don’t mind us when we bugger up.

We’ll try not to mind the buggers who bugger us up.

And lead us not into Southern ways,

But deliver us from t’mucky stuff.

For thine is this county, wi’ power ‘n’t glory,

For a reet long time.

Ay oop.

Hi Simon, loved the line,"But deliver us from't'mucky stuff!"Speaks to the heart just as well as the traditional line,"But deliver us from evil!" Haha!...plus the lingo is easily understood by me as a Wiganer!

Thanks guys. I am an atheist, but I am just following a long tradition of Lord's Prayer translations. Anthony Burgess wrote about some of them. There have been Scouse ones, Jamaican ones etc. My mate John G. Hall wrote a great one recently for monkeys which begins, 'Our banana...'
I am a Mancunian who has lived in West Yorkshire for three years now and I tried not just to convert the text into Yorkshire dialect but get some of the sense of the people's attitude into it. Hence the understatement of 'Tha's norra bad fella' rather than 'Hallowed be thy name' and the general county pride of the whole thing. After all, this is God's country we are talking about!
I enjoyed writing it. Thanks for the comments.
