Winston Plowes is our Bard in the Bog

entry picture

Write Out Loud’s ever-popular Winston Plowes has found a captive audience for his work – in the public loos of the Shetland Isles.

The Bards in the Bog project  - profits go to the charity WaterAid – involves the installation in Shetland’s toilets of poems selected by poet and Shetland Libraries’ reader in residence, Jen Hadfield.

Winston said:  “The Bards in the Bog scheme has run for a few years now by Shetland Libraries, although it was only intended for one year. Poems have been keeping people occupied in public conveniences on the Shetland Isles ever since. Unfortunately I couldn't attend the presentation in person - the Shetlands are somewhat remote.”

You can read Winston’s poem, Gutter Gourmet, here. It was also read out on BBC Radio 5 Live.

The 'minty mile long breaker' is rather a propos, too :)

The poem is superb Winston. So visual, visceral, gustatory and easy to swallow too!

Heh heh - that's one way of being read, I suppose... Let's hope it doesn't prove too much of a strain for them... :)
