Lament for the World (Part 2; Ending)

entry picture

The world is a cheap and nasty place

Engrossed in its own self interests,

The world is a cold and empty space

In love with money and married to excess.

Capitalism has devoured socialism

And corporation has extinguished individualism,

Progress has overtaken evolution

And civilisation has abandoned morality.

All ambitions are driven by avarice, profit and gain

Ignoring virtue, nobility and honour,

Every deal is done by a brag, spiv or a shark

Elevating the seller and deceiving the buyer.

Everything is done just for a cheap thrill and great impact

Comprising only of sound bites, spin and zany effect,

Everything is engulfed in noise strident and brash

The world is mesmerised by bang, wallop and crash.

All news and information is presented as entertainment

Nothing but clichés, icons, falsehoods and convolution,

Sparse on facts but bourgeoning with tease and speculation

Purely image without form and vision without reality.

The mass media turns everything into a frivolous sensation

Trivialising violence, death and destruction,

Conditioning the world into apathy, vulgarity and futility by

Influence without authority and power without accountability.

We are Governed by lawyers and exploited by bankers

Controlled by consultants, analysts’ and speculators,

No politician can be trusted no tradesman relied upon all

Propaganda without foundation and business without service.

Culture is in regression and ethics abandoned

Standards are falling and the language depraved,

History is being ignored and wickedness rewarded

The World has ended; we are utterly bereft.
