NEARLY  LOVE

(A parting sonnet for Jean)

Let` not call this cosy comfort love,

But only say that once there was a time

When the loneliness and travel-heat of the way

Became too much for us, when it was enough

To leave the world go by us and recline,

I in your deep kindness - you in mine.

And though we boast: We never did betray

Cupid with words` being much too wise,

Let`s confess: Our arms, our lips, our eyes

Sometimes told untruths in our despite.

But, Jean, they were such little, little lies

That he just chuckled and forgave us - quite.

But now - for truths sake - just before we go:

It was not love...but it was nearly so.

I love this. Almost love - there is nothing sadder than that. It doesn't bear the scars or disappointment of real love - just the sweet memories tinged with regret that Anthony speaks of. Beautiful. Really beautiful.

Hi Harry,

I enjoyed this read - almost a confessional. The sonnet form is particularly good in creating snapshots of life. This is bittersweet - haapy memories tinged with regret, well paced and almoist incidental rhyming. As Val says, the last line encapsulates the whole - two souls finding comfort in each other. A refreshing twist on love, memory and friendship.

Regards,

A.E.

Harry,I love this poem its so tender,`cosy comfort love` good .
Query - `To let the world` would sound more suited `To leave the world`
Then dispirit maybe.
The ending too was spot on. Good work
