Why Do You Want This Job?

The job interview

is the biggest lie.

Two people sit

facing each other

in a room

in the world.

One asks questions.

One answers.

None of these questions matter.

None are human.

One tells how great it is

to work in this company.

One says how much they

really want the job.

You reckon you can do it?

I’m the right guy.

Why do you want to work here?

I have ever since I was born.

This place is the best. We have benefits.

I am a decent creature.

Nod, smile.

Shake hands.

Laugh.

Eye contact.

You reckon you’ll stick it?

Of course. I want to work here forever.

You won’t go mad?

No.

You won’t kill everyone?

Not a chance.

Okay we’ll

let you know.

Both have lied.

Both know it too.

The trick is to ignore the fact that you lied

so well, so efficiently again.

Ignore it in the same way

you manage to ignore death.

When we were kids

we used to scream,

almost as much as we do now.
