I Hated Being Outdated

They said our library was outdated

So now we’ve gone all automated - - -

Well, I don’t like it: sounds absurd! –

Once, I enjoyed a civil word

With the librarian at the counter:

Such a pleasant, nice encounter! –

All that’s gone! – and, dearie me,

We’ve gone all high-tech and IT –

And poor old Martha Plumton-Scott

Can’t cope at all – gone all to pot –

And tries to converse with the scanner –

In quite an overbearing manner….

I saw her, in hospital bed –

And all she ever, ever said

Was “Why can’t things remain the same

As ever they were? – such a shame!”

And, honestly, I must agree:

Because it really seems to me

Advances of technology

Steal humanness from you and me……

I think this is charming as it gallops along in rhyme and rhythm, and it makes an serious social point in a comic way. Well done.
