Don't look back
She leans down brushing her hair
Across my cheek
I feel the warmth of her breath
Her brown eyes flash and
A smile breaks over her face
As she asks whether I am alright
I swallow hard and manage a yes
The death of dark days pass
As I realise that she is there
In the moment
I feel life surge through my body
My brain acknowledges the light
And the fight is over
The constant aching sweat
The self-inflicted retreat
Of if and why and maybe
My heart flowing fast and steady
A pumping surge urging me to fly
I rise again away from the night
Black curtain room full
Of tears and of sorrow
Now pulled down
As I walk out into the day
The sun blazing high down the lane
Where she and I had often walked
Her bright flashing smile telling me its O.K.
It’s time to move on
To be upright to live the life
Of a thousand days or more
As she waves and is swallowed up
By the light and the leaves and the breeze
In the trees
And I stand for a while to bask in all
That has passed and then walk
And at her bidding
Finally, don’t look back
