Special relations

entry picture

The wind, blowing from a cruel westerly,

mild breeze to full-blown misery

We had the sun once: a light in the world

we’ve lost sight of you, once the tempest blew.

Unable to catch our life given breath

This storm takes hope to its grave in death

We had the sun once: a light in the world

that’s now estranged once the tide had changed,

In a concerted effort of will, blow back

Tight flutter the butterfly effect, flap, flap

We had the sun once: a light in the world

but ignorance persists, the light no longer exists

Bullies huddled together in dark, dark corners

Presidents, dictators, who mock, then scorn us

We had the sun once: a light in the world

that’s unfriended, the shared light has ended

Thank you Helen, us English have in the past been embarrassed by our leaders, but even our last 4 prime ministers could never have dreamed of upsetting family and friends as much as DJT and side with the west's natural enemy. The world is on an edge and we all hope we can be brought back

A powerful, sorrowful poem. Here in the US, many feel this sorrow. In the unpredictable future, may the light shine again (even if differently). My fervent hope: out of loss and confusion, comes growth and--one magic day--harmony. Thanks JD for a stirring, well-written poem. Also appreciated reading Uilleam's and Rolph's insightful comments.

JD,
I found Special relations to be deeply evocative. The way you use "the sun" as a symbol of hope and unity, only to have it fade away amidst the storm, really struck a chord. The contrast between light and darkness, both natural and human-made, creates a powerful reflection on the challenges and divisions we face in the world. Your depiction of political figures as "bullies" in the shadows emphasises the loss of collective hope and the hardening of our society. It’s a poignant and emotional piece, and it makes me reflect on the need to fight for that lost light. Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt message.
Regards,
Rolph
