Donkey Jacket

They said it was the longest suicide note ever

and created Care in the Community.

They said a donkey jacket was disrespectful

and manufactured shell suits.

They said there was an enemy within

and gave birth to New Labour.

They said there was no such thing as society

and we all stopped in to watch telly.

They said only failures caught the bus

and charged us with congestion.

They championed the Right to Buy

and sold us dodgy pensions.

They said Gotcha!

and we thought they meant somebody else.

We know who 'they' are, Ray, and they haven't gone away. Apparently the Queen Mother liked the Donkey Jacket.

Very sharp, incisive poem.

Hi Ray,

Being an old git of 62 I remember the "Donkey Jacket" debacle. The press jumped on it to destroy MF.

Personally the disrespect was throwing men up the line to have them massacred and mown down like falling plates, but lets not worry about such trivia. Many of those young men would have been familiar with the "Donkey Jacket" more so than the military regalia and the poncy long coated oft faux solemnity of our glorious leaders.

A thoughtful piece of writing that unfortunately may be a mystery to many.

The donkey jacket is a reference to Michael Foot wearing one at The Cenotaph. I'm asking a lot of the reader, perhaps, especially
those under 50 years of age.
