REDIFFUSION

entry picture

While walking down the High Street

I wondered “Where’d they go?”

I looked for Rediffusion

But find it, could I?  No!.

Before the time of mobile phones

If you’d want to know

The football scores at 5 o’clock

That was where you’d go.

Now where I once watched hoping

And praying Spurs won’t lose

It’s now a beauty parlour

Where you can get tattoos.

It doubles as a nail bar

Staffed by young Chinese

I don’t begrudge their livelihood

But don’t want none of these.

And next door’s an attraction

A youngster qawps and gapes

It’s where he buys illegally

His fruity flavoured vapes.

And “Get Your Mobile Covers”

On a window I would read

And wondered in a lifetime

How many you would need.

To make a living out of these

Volume is a must

How many would you need to sell

To make an honest crust?

And opposite the vape shop

A fortune might be made

Or not;  cos it’s the bookies

Who plys his timeless trade.

And so I trudge these deadbeat doors

Where old kebabs are tossed

I’ll need to us use my mobile phone

To find that Spurs have lost.

A sad loss indeed, Stephen. Rediffusion reminds me of Borders bookshop. They both provided a social service - everybody looked at their goods but nobody bought anything.

Enjoyed this one, John. I remember watching test cricket there on my way home from school.
Some things never change, though.

There’s no-one else to blame, Uilleam, except me (and you). We didn’t shop there.
And thanks for the Like, Holden.

deadbeat doors - what was once our "High Street" is now a home for society's rejects.
