tomb of Captain Eudemos

“..the ship is anchored

at its last Harbour,

never more to depart,

for no aid is now forthcoming

from either wind or sunlight;

Captain Eudemos, taking leave

of the light-bearing dawn,

was buried there

and his ship with its lifespan

short as day, like a broken wave.”

Thanks for your comment, David.

I feel lucky to have noticed it as I'm sure many who pass that way don't.

Really, it still moves me as something quite profound and even suggestive of an anachronistic and rare bit of knowledge to which, surely, only the most fortunate were privy 🌷

The descriptive use of "Like a broken wave" carries so much within four words.

The force of a vibrant life briefly rolling like thunder only to break onto a shore and recede, spilling its every precious moment into grains of indifferent sand.

Those Greeks eh!

A translated piece of Grecian poetry found while perusing the remains of a once civilized site...
