Voice

Each time he gave voice to pity, to waste –

'Abstract values' in a certain parlance –

Some people would turn and say: ‘That’s no good;

You have to take sides, find someone to blame,

Separate the good guys from the villains,

Find a flag to wave, learn a proper chant.

Your words should sting like a pointed finger.’

He understood the lure of a world

Of certainty, where all doubt is banished.

Conformity could be so attractive.

Then he thought of the innocents; skewered

Or blown fifty yards into the rubble.

Did they take sides, as their death embraced them?

He hushed his voice, unsure how to proceed.

Articles in this think-tank website are helping me understand a wee bit about the complex forces behind the current horrific situation

Very good Stephen, really well articulated.

I'm struggling to proceed with thoughts on the current conflict, wanting the best outcome for all, but sitting on the fence isn't an acceptable place (yet) for those so caught up.

Thank you, Graham, for your thougthtful remarks. No, we shouldn't stop trying! It is true that many of us see conflicts in black and white terms, but I think that certain universal values (which I have satirised as 'abstract' here) should prevail. Every life lost in a conflict, on either 'side' is one too many, an unnecessary waste. Talk may be cheap, but things like this need to be said, even if people are annoyed by it.

Thank you, Hélène. I sympathise with your friend's suffering, and we should mourn and condemn all the slaughter. And, of course, we should do our best to be kind. And we should not forget the pity and the waste of all war, and set that as our benchmark.

Thanks again to both of you for responding to this poem, inspired by the current, appalling events.

And thank you to Adam, Frederick and Manish for liking.

Wow. Powerful, powerful poem. And Graham's thoughtful comment. I am firmly planted in the land of "let's meet in the middle." But when someone's emotional heart is bleeding because of their experience (eg my friend here in California who grew up in Israel), I don't tell her to try to see both sides, I simply listen and send her love. So many layers to every conflict. Thanks Stephen for this profound poem. Discerning when to speak & when to be silent....and when we speak we do our best to be kind.

How quickly we tend to side with one thing or the other. The underdog for example, the fairer team, someone we take too?

How do we balance blame, see both sides of an argument, honestly mean when we say ‘let the best man win’.

We are human, fallible, biased, etc but we shouldn’t stop trying!
