East Norfolk Elegy

Norfolks Hemsby shore

Tidal surges persist.

Every passing storm

More precious land's dismissed.

The consequences

Abruptly take its toll.

As Marram grassed dunes

Relinquish any hold or control.

Higher levels and warmer seas,

Rising tides and storms collide,

Crash against geologically feeble coast

Which then inevitably slips and slides.

The once sandy dunes recede and die

This coastline weaves and wends,

It's the community's final dance

Watching their homes and lives upend.

Usually the waves caress

As if with a lover's tender touch,

But hidden behind that gentleness,

Lies a force that's just too much.

The sand is slowly shifting

North Sea shoreline bears the brunt.

The change in climates touch intensifies

Our beautiful coast attacked upon every front.

Mother Nature's concerned lament

Is only just now being heard

She screams a clarion call for action

First, heal what has been disturbed.

With conservation and with care

We could mend our fragile land,

Future safe this stricken coast

But we all must lend a hand.

We require political fortitude

To protect these coastal lands

Vote for those who'll uniquely draw

A proverbial line into the sand.
