Bike

entry picture

It looked a very sporty piece of kit

and useful, when I bought my hybrid bike

to get me where I’m going and keep me fit,

but that was years ago and now it sits

beside the bins as if it’s gone on strike

from serving as a sporty piece of kit.

I often would, but find obliged to quit.

Big tools or bulky shopping, or suchlike,

prevent me getting there while keeping fit.

There’s country lanes would bring me joy to flit,

to glide through air as smoothly as a pike

through water on this sporty piece of kit

but sorting lights and gloves and helmet, it’s

less fuss to take the bus, or simply hike

to where I want to go while keeping fit.

Perhaps when I retire I shall admit

I’ve run out of excuses, and I’ll psych

myself to use this sporty piece of kit

to get me where I’m going and keep me fit?

Yes MC, I know what you mean. I’ve had 3 bikes stolen during the course of my life. Two I recovered (both are long stories - maybe I’ll write poems about them some day) I get around the problem now by having a rusty old bike from the 1990s that no sane thief would bother to steal!

I used to find riding a bike was not the biggest problem, but
being stressed by the fear it would the victim of damage and thievery once there! Walking or taking the bus (tube in London)
was always a chosen alternative if practical. 😐
