CONQUEST: May 29th 1457

entry picture

Waiting for the barbarians is over:
As whiter shades of pale, pretty traces of lace,
Reveal in opal-luminosity these late Romans,
Their indigo-dream, red with gore on this bloody May Day
Arabian savagery negates their absorption into the timeless
Creation of Constantinople’s drift and swell,
Elysium’s perfumed garden of lucidity broken by
Mehmed’s Turkic desecration, his sweltering road to hell,
Friars digging stench-filled graves for Byzantium’s raped ladies;
Ragged monks drag the crucified down from St Sophia’s walls
As the muezzin calls the conquerors to triumphant prayer,
To answer deep-echoes of love’s sympathy for the devil
Culminating in these Transylvanian transformations:
Under the endless summer skies of holy Constantinople
Planes lengthen shadows above these steepling twin towers,
As  holy war resumes its darkest powers.

John,
Thank you for your remarks which I fully accept. The present Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew has become a solitary figure with a small and declining Christian population which lives in the immediate proximity of his residence. He has repeatedly asked for the Turkish Government to help with various issues but receives no cooperation. Many Christians from Aleppo and in Kurdistan have fled violence and persecution. Assad's dictatorship, Putin's dictatorship and the Turkish President, all but in name a dictator, have combined to eradicate Christianity in the region and what makes matters worse is the impotence and lack of interest of Christians in the West. There is ignorance in the West as they turn a blind eye to atrocities and religious genocide. I am with you all the way John.

Thank you Keith & Holden. To tell you the truth Keith, I think that very few people in our no longer Christian society give a damn about the persecuted Christians of the East. We did nothing when the Turks decided to rid themselves of their Christian minority by a policy of mass slaughter of men, women and children, 4 million dead. The Turks are are now aiding Whabbi Muslims in their successful attempts to exterminate the Christians of Kurdistan. Syria & Iraq. We do nothing.

A poem with powerful language which recalls savagery on an appalling scale. The desecration of Constantinople continues. This citadel of Byzantium fell into the hands of infidels neither Christian or Muslim but to those who pay lip service only and today remains so. A tragedy yet to be fully realised.
Thank you for this.
Keith
