On The Plus Side

You can't hammer a post into the ground
without delighting country dancers
who'll weave ancient ribbons
all around your maypole.
You can't sweep a square yard
free of fallen leaves
without a picnic taking place.
And if you should stop
there'll be strangers nodding
then neighbours, then friends.
Even moving away you'll be leading
a sanguine and spirited parade
if you could but know it.
Even when you disappear
your cause will be taken up without a hitch
and you will be rightly celebrated
as any other ordinary hero.
