RUSSIAN SOLDIER

Russian Soldier,

did you know that you might die?

now here you lie -

discarded and alone -

scattered limbs flung far and wide

undocumented  -  lost  -  unknown,

no one to mourn your passing,

There'e no romance in death,

there is no glory -

no Heaven -

Heaven is a myth - devised by those

who sent you to your death,

to instill a false bravado in your breast

You were useful while you lived,

could hold a gun -

now that you are gone -

abandoned to the mud and gore,

following those who went before,

letting others take your place

to face the spitting guns.

               So Russian Soldier,

did you know the reason why?

did you really choose to die?

Thank you Rolph for your very kind comment it is quite a morale booster.
For myself there is little to know, I am a dyslexic woman well into my eighties, I started to write poetry when my brother-in-law gave me a 'made-up' computer and I am loving being able to Write Out Loud.
I now have a 'posh' laptop.

Thank you for writing to me today so that I could get to know you and your poems.
This poem is a fantastic poem despite its content and subject matter. It should be given to every volunteer who wants to go to the recruiting office to read. Would he still sign?
A truly powerful poem. Thank you for it!

Thank you to Massoud and Holden for taking the time to read and like.
Thank you Stephen - it is a poem that arrived unbidden and flew onto the page - it coincided with Putin raising the spectre of conscription and the mass exodus of young men 'who didn't choose to die'

A brutal but magnificent poem. This kind of thing just has to be written.
