Must ang

Mustang

Freedom , speed , power ,beauty

Silhouette against the sun

The water hole he drinks from’s muddy

paws the soil the droughts begun.

Star of the screen,

boyhood dreams , colts and Winchesters

Chaps , lassoes

Goodies, baddies, whose who?

Mustang carries all,

until he falls

Harnessed by the Cowboy

Free under the Indian tribe

The great American dream

Slaughters all before it

Mustang, Buffalo, Decency

Stood proud , just here for the ride

Crazy Horse,Sitting Bull, Geronimo

Where are you now?

Ancestors before you , husband the plains, balance the rains

Mount your Mustangs

Spear in hand defeat humanity

They wipe you out for greed and vanity.

You are now gone except your horse

Distant shadows dark remorse

Herds that thunder down the valley

Ears that twitch to Indian Rally

Braves have died with bow in hand

Squaws are raped at soldiers command

Chiefs are murdered hung and shot

Because ‘Great’ America wants the lot

And all that’s left is poor old horse,

With little grass and no recourse

His place in History should be proud.

He’s served us all but now cries loud

My waterhole is all but dry

No rain is falling from the sky

I paw the ground in desperation.

Please help me for I’ve served the nation.

A fine, moving poem, Pete.
