A Second Chance

A Second Chance

I did not listen to His voice

I allowed it to be smothered by other voices

I listened to my own voice

and to my own detriment

I had joined the foolish

and participated in their futile games

I followed their callings and conformed

as those led to a prepared slaughter

I jeopardised my soul and life

In old age I repent of this daily

time wasted, time past, irretrieveable

Yet mercy and compassion heralds the same voice

I clearly hear the call

Am I too old to respond?

as I know what my answer will be

I shall follow the voice until eternity

and repent along the way

because there has never been another way

John,
Thank you for your comment. This realisation which prompted the poem has come about gradually and I hope the time available to have a second chance is now present.
Thank you again,
Keith

Thank you to: Frederick, Stephen A., Holden, Moonlight and Carol for your likes of this poem. Thank you also to Stephen G for your comment. The poem is I suppose a clear example of how subjective poetry can be which often confuses the reader. Thank you all for reading the poem.
