CATS AND RATS

Consider two city swellers

Both strugging to survive

One is feted; one is hated,,

Both desperate to stay alive.

What lottery of life prevails

That sees their fates allot?

One might be fondly coddled

The other poisoned or shot.

When you happen to see either

Scurrying off, each to its lair

Just be grateful you are neither

And reflect how life's not fair

JB - thank you for the kind words. I might not want to confront
a rat but, like pigeons here in town, I harbour a certain "underdog" sort of sympathy for their situation in the cycle of
life.

I enjoy the symmetry of this poem and the analogies you draw our attention to. Ingenious writing MC. 👍

Thanks SG. I recall a torrential downpour while walking along a
nearby street one afternoon some years ago and seeing a very large rat crossing some yards ahead of a startled woman who
stopped in her tracks at its unexpected appearance and immediate disappearance into a nearby basement. These age-old creatures are true survivors, said to be so numerous they
are within a short distance of us at any given time - yet how
often do we actually see them?
Thanks also to those with their "likes".

A very clever poem, MC, and quite true. Perhaps I'm biaised because we have spotted rats in our garden recently.
