The Prince and King Rat

entry picture

Once upon a time
in a land not too far away
People lived their lives
in a free and happy way

Their leader a Prince amongst men
smart, brave and strong
His countrymen praised him
to them he could do no wrong

Their close neighbours
came from “the land of make believe”
Ruled by a corrupt dictator
whose mission was to deceive

He was an monstrous ogre
a ruthless, greedy billionaire
I give him the name of King Rat
as he was wicked beyond compare

During the harsh nights of winter
he tossed and turned in his bed
Dreams of control and power
spun around his tortured head

As the cold winter turned to spring
he woke in a fit of rage
Driven by his greed for glory
a brutal war he did stage

He gathered together an army
a plague of savage rodents
They bullied, tortured and terrorised
their innocent opponents

The result was a brutal, vicious
cruel and harrowing war
The world looked on in disbelief
and questioned, what is it all for?

The Prince’s folk were defiant
they fought back with all their might
Valiant, relentless and fearless
they commanded their bravest fight

The world witnessed the mass destruction
watched on with tears in their eyes
King Rat dismissed claims of war crimes
continued to spew fictitious lies

Forced to leave the battle ground
in a humiliating defeat
Tails tucked between their legs
King Rat ordered his men to retreat

Undeterred by tectonic failings
he continues with this war
Where it will end no one knows
but life will never be as before

I hope and pray the Prince’s people
will soon claim their victory
A tale of good overcoming evil
to go down in history

Thanks for the likes and kind comments. I really wasn’t sure about posting this one. But it stayed in my head all day yesterday and I decided to share it rightly or wrongly.

A Great piece, Julie. Rats are notoriously hard to kill, but they always scurry back into there holes eventually...

A fascinating allegory, Julie. Great rhyming too.
