Something New

Does anyone have something new to say,

Or have they spouted this same stuff before?

The pundit with the shoulder-shrugging way,

The smug contrarian, the golf club bore,

Seem to have drifted through the point of ripe:

A busted flush, well past their sell-by date.

So new kids brandish platitudes and tripe,

Passed on as humdrum tools of their estate.

Your point is well made, MC. Yes, there will always be new, inspired voices who reinvent enduring themes. May be I am hankering after a golden age which never existed but there does seem to be an awful lot of banality around at the moment, in print and on TV. However, perhaps the tone of the poem was a little too pessimistic.

Interesting and worthy of a response; perhaps that poetry, like
much else, is recycled from what has gone before in basic
human terms, but adapted to suit and reflect the fashions and
tastes of the age in which it is produced . The timeless themes
relevant to existence will always survive if produced with skill, imagination and respect.
