The Path Of Least Resistance

There is a trail
the grass worn down by steady use
you can see it clearly
as it winds into the woods
there are tracks here in the dried mud
of the animals who travel by night
the deer the bobcats the coyotes
they use the trail to get to a road
which is easier for them
they wildlife prefer the road
it's a clear shot for a mile or two
and all they have to do
is walk along it unopposed
without fighting through brush or cactus or wire
it lets them get where they want to get
they have it figured out
like humans they take the easy way
the path of least resistance.
