Hoopla
The hoopla over New Years day
always leaves me laughing,
what is the myth we're dealing with
that celebrates each passing,
Reflect on what we did this year
forgive us our trespassing,
acknowledge we are lucky just
to see more sins amassing.

You are quite right of course. Figuratively speaking many need a reason to re-start ideas, habits, traditions and the like without asking why they are habits in the first place.
