Opening Night

He sat through the whole thing
the middle-school play
even though his back was killing him
from sitting on that hard metal chair

it was like sitting on spikes for the old man
his back kept hurting
and no matter how he adjusted
he just could not get comfortable
but these are the things a grandfather does
when his grandson is center stage
giving a great performance

the crowd went crazy
clapping and cheering and
to see the smile on his grandson's face
the sense of accomplishment in his eyes
was its own reward
it was all the grandfather needed
it made him happy
it made him proud

as the curtain comes down
on one life
it is opening night for the other
the beginning of a life that will be full of
success and achievement
his grandson is a natural

the grandfather will hold this night
in his memory
the grandson will build on his performance
he will grow in confidence
and go on to do more great things
his future unlimited

the old pass the torch
the young are eager to run with it
and so it goes

that's the way life works.

Lovely poem, d. That's what life's about, I guess.

This is so true and beautifully expressed. It is how I feel about my grandson, anyway. Bravo, dk.
