An American poet and journalist who appeared at London's Southbank Centre six years ago alongside a women Afghan MP to talk about "secret poetry" of Afghan women - landays - has appealed for donations to support safe houses for Afghan women targeted by the Taliban after their takeover of the country.

Eliza Griswold said on Twitter two days ago: "Contribute to this GoFundMe campaign, at any level, organised by Afghan activist Samira Hamidi and administered through local volunteers who are getting aid directly to those in need. Support safe houses that are protecting women in Afghanistan targeted by the Taliban."

Earlier she had tweeted: "Here is a landay from an Afghan friend : Dear President Biden for you in Afghanistan, our blood is now worth less than water."
