Hard Times

When will we see the clear blue sky again?

All living in a frightful fog of fear, always

remembering the long lorryloads of coffins,

avoiding and even distrusting ever familiar faces.

Where might they have been?

Who might they have been with?

What might they have touched?

Shopping become a hazardous trolleytrip,

checkout girl now avoiding eye contact,

worried that a wisp from some tainted breath

could overpower her and those anxious at home,

smile gone, not cheerily outgoing as before.

Is there a silver lining to this thick grey diffidence?

Think love-in-a-mist, not the lovely flower

but something essential to help us survive.

Later, perhaps, with all at last behind us

we will value more our former everyday pleasures and pursuits,

as well as friends, acquaintances and family,

now thankful for what once seemed unbearably monotonous.

Thanks Stephen, agree how one misses not being able to read the paper in a café, or have a drink outside in the evening ! Only positive aspect to Covid I can think of - that we will enjoy these simple pleasures so much more when the worst is over.

This poem puts its finger on something important, Jennifer. I realise how much I miss seemingly mundane pleasures and pursuits, such as reading a newspaper in a café. Counting the days to when I can enjoy them again.

Thanks for this.

Thanks Keith and KJ for the comments, glad you agree with what I hope might be a positive consequence out of all the disaster. Silver lining is rather trite, but a fog is like a cloud after all. Many thanks
again! Thanks also KJ and Keith, Hugh, Kevin, Aviva and Holden for the greatly appreciated likes.

It won't be long now, and all this will be behind us.
As you say, when it's over we'll value what we have all the more.

Jennifer,

A poem which enters into the fullness of this moment and how we live our lives. Fearful and frustrated but as you begin the final stanza you speak of a silver lining which I believe to be the ultimate issue. From these dark days in which we have had time to reflect on many aspects of life we will emerge, hopefully, with a greater sense of appreciation for who we are and move forward as better people. Suffering often strengthens us. The pandemic will play a part in this.

Thank you for this

Keith
