River Ducks

the late summer heat
relaxes the Chagrin River for ducks
they glide, unhurriedly floating along
with fuzzy buoyant seeds
from giant overhead
maple trees

we sit by the water’s edge
on a crumbling sandstone step
the mallards swim over for bread
your head is on my shoulder
we blend together, content
seeing through the clear lens of us,
children giggle, fatten the ducks,
ice cream cones
dribble dirt-trail faces,
on this hazy, lazy day, perfect
under a grinning sunset–
simple and plain
we.
