Terra Mater (Mother Earth)

entry picture

Sing to me sweet Terra Mater, that you may sooth my weary soul,
Brush my cheek with loving kisses, make my heart now broken, whole,
Wash my hands in absolution, wash them in your boiling seas,
Wash my eyes of disillusion, make my guilty conscience ease,
Hold me in your gentle arms, suffer me in your embrace,
Forgive me for the thoughtless lines, that I have carved into your face,
Know I never meant you harm, but as any wayward child,
I knew not the consequence, of trust once given, then defiled,
And as all wayward children do, to your arms I now return,
Begging your forgiveness now the lesson’s finally learned,
Hear me now sweet Terra Mater, as I take a humble knee,
Finally I understand, all the gifts you gave to me,
For from your dust you gave me life, and from your lungs you gave me breath,
And from your breast you suckled me, and suckle me until my death,
And bathed me as an infant child, in waters that were calm and deep,
And in return I pledged to you, a promise I would never keep,
I pledged to never do you wrong, to hold you always in my heart,
To keep our sacred union strong, to walk our path and never part,
But as I grew my head was turned, and from our path I slowly strayed,
And in my greed your flesh was burned, and in my sloth my, “Bed was made,”
And in my lust our love was lost, and in my wrath it was denied,
And gluttonous, I weighed the cost of truth against my dented pride,
And thus I lived for many years, envious of love defiled,
Until at last I learned the cost, of guilt that plagues the wayward child,
And now it is my time to rest, and to your arms I glad return,
Knowing that I failed the test, and pleading that my lesson’s learned,
And know though you have every right, to turn my sorry soul away,
That you will hug me oh so tight, and in your arms I’ll finally lay.

Thank you so much Stephen and Julie, really appreciated and I'm glad it made you think.

Funny you should say that Victoria, someone has just approached me and asked if they could include it in a nature anthology,so it just goes to show, great minds think alike, (Meaning your great minds obviously) I'm very flattered that you both had the same thought.

And Paul, I have to say I loved your rendition of, "Gire and Gimble," too and I have to say, I was really humbled by that as well.

Thanks for sharing the love you beautiful people, so glad you enjoyed it.

Wow Jason. This is up there among the best nature poems I’ve ever read. It is a timely and powerful message that definitely deserves a wider audience. Perhaps in a nature anthology released on Earth Day!

Thank you Aviva, you're so kind, (And as ever if you spot any typos, feel free to point them out, it really helps and I still haven't thanked you properly for the last time❤)

And also thank you Paul, that is some high praise indeed, and of course, on the subject of reading work out loud, if you want to, feel free my friend, I loved the last one. I know I rarely get on WOL now but there is a community here that I think will always have a really special place in my heart. The move to concentrating more on Instagram was mainly for the benefit of my kids as they would be far more likely to read this stuff there than here, and after all, most of it was written for them, (Not all obviously, but most).
