Fake News

I don’t see the point

Of writing stuff

That is not true.

But you do.

You work for that rag

That prints the junk.

You know it’s fake,

For God’s sake.

They just make it up;

It’s all a myth.

You only stay

For the pay.

The day the world ends,

You’ll be the last

To feel the pain.

Once again.

Reminds me of that line from the editor of The Shinbone Star in John Ford's fine Western "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance": When the legend becomes fact, print the legend. Hyperbole,
unattributable quotes and half-truths are staples of the trade.
There is no such thing as an unbiased media - just less or more,
according to source and intent. The trick is to understand that - and mentally filter what's on offer. Once, years ago, I wrote to an
editor of The Observer, challenging the content of a big article by
its team of investigative reporters. My effort got no response from
the editor but I did get an abusive reply from the two journalists
concerned that failed to answer my numerous reservations about
what was written and published. And that was long before the
term "fake news" arrived on the scene. All good fun but hardly likely to encourage whole-hearted trust in the reliability of the business.

Thanks to everyone for the comments and the likes. Yes, news is better told than controlled, although I have no problem with newspapers or magazines having a political agenda. In fact, it's probably a good thing, because "neutral" journalism is likely to be rather dull.
The problem is when news and opinion become conflated, and news becomes opinion, à la Fox News. I often read the Guardian, which is, of course, completely unbiased. Honest.....

More, more I say - all this dumping of iffy info needs exposure.

Trouble is, will we ever be able to control it. ?
