Words That Mend Broken Dreams

As fallow spells go, that one went

Not a sign of the partner I was after

Wit and charm were what I needed

Not yawns or cold careless laughter

Souls may crack like china ornaments

A heart may not be intact as it seems

When appears a fellow-spirit speaking

Words that can mend broken dreams

Her face was honest fair and strong

No beauty burnished her features

Instead she had a twinkle in her eye

A card was she, rarest of creatures

Wanda was mistress of dark humour

Her tide of epigrams dry as dust

Most of all, beneath that raconteur

Her heart pumped a surfeit of lust

My disillusion frayed under her assaults

Cynicism upped and reached for its hat

Life took on a fresh sparkle with Wanda

Gone days when life was stale and flat

LIfe is no more cold ducking and diving

Wanda has ironed out my wilder kinks

Some days my sides ache with laughter

Often when she cracks a gag, she winks

Old flames were ornaments on parade

While below the gloss they were fakes

But Wanda and me spark off each other

I dread the day our partnership breaks

Souls may crack like china ornaments

A heart may not be intact as it seems

When appears a fellow-spirit speaking

Words that can mend broken dreams
