blackthorn

entry picture

She was pure as the blackthorn

Sweet as the apple tree

Trusting in nature

Oh how she loved me!

Her heart, an open book

Her soul was a dove

And when she looked at me

Her heart it said “love.”

I courted her in maytime

When blossom hung low

I told her I loved her

Wanted her to know

That my heart it was heavy

As the flowers above

Heavy with sadness

Heavy with love.

When I came to take her

She cried out for me

She was the most loving

That any maid could be

But I had to leave her

I had to go

I hoped she’d forgive me

I hoped that she’d know.

When we came together

We weathered the storm

The storm of our loving

So pure and so warm

She cried out to take me

Into her pale arms

She cried out to have me

And keep me from harm.

She was pure as the hawthorn

white as the snow

She said she forgave me

When I had to go.

And I know that she loved me

Her heart was so strong

And we’ll be apart

But it won’t be for long.

She was pure as the blackthorn

sweet as the apple tree

Trusting in nature

Oh how she loved me!

I would've added a bridge but I didn't get planning permission!

I liked it too, Ann.
Lovely voice - I'd forgotten the Collins's's's's. I thought it vaguely reminiscent of Sandy Denny (praps b.y.t?).
I think Gus has a point - a couple of bridges would give it a bit more dimension.
Can't knock the voice, though. You can sing me to sleep anytime.

Hi Ann I think as a song it possibly needs a bridge or reprise of some kind.

Her hair it was golden

Her teeth they were green

I didn't know of her going

But I knew where'd she'd been

....with a hey hey .....dah dah

Nice when the old ditties buzz about ya...

Nice voice...

My attempt at an english folk song! I was singing it on my way home from the beach and the blackthorn looked so lovely along the hedgerows. But when I got home I couldn't seem to "get" it back quite! Hey (nonny nonny) ho! Shirley & Dolly Collins anyone? They were brill! (Unlike me!)
