WHAT IT'S LIKE OVER 70

Three score years and ten

then we begin again,

let's see:

discontinued life insurance cover,

doors held open,

serial nostalgia kicks in

expectation that life owes us.

A sense of drying out,

slowing down,

a feeling of disquieting superiority,

increased dependency on social media as a helpline.

Humour used as defence when available.

What made us laugh is now antisocial,

so we must begin again

if only to serve as an example to those

who'll never catch up with us.

Nice Ray! Always seem to miss the good ones. Drying out ,definitely, how much does one spend on worthless moisturers!? What made us laugh is now extremely politically incorrect. I have only just discovered Flashman, having missed out on it, living here. Nobody has had me up for discrimination yet, although i keep them hidden! Humour also used as defence, except it isn't easy here as Tuscans are masters of repartee, so it's usually unwise to start it. Superiority no, but as we have usually been through the problem before, we may not agree on the newer solutions.

Thanks Graham. I read your poem and again I feel that there is that overview of a vast history of challenges that we've been through on international levels eg. The Cuban Missile Crisis, The Suez Crisis, The Isis Crisis and not forgetting the Mid Life Crisis.

Yes Mark. It can only be a sense of threat and fear that could turn our habits around - it could turn into an almost heroic compliance . The National Trust must rely on the over 70s for support, so we do have some influence.

Not sure about those semantics Bryan; we should be sure of our ground, but it's mainly a state of mind.

Martin, sorry mate you havn't yet experienced that impasse, but I always think you're as old as the person you feel (whoops!)
Thanks you Greg and Vautaw for your reading and liking.

Not sure that today's snowflakes see us as examples Ray...we seem to be getting blamed for all the isues past and future.

I'm not sure we sound like cannon fodder - more like certain mindsets see us as such in terms of social obsolescence when
push comes to shove and a certain loss of courage and confidence enters the national psyche. Wear gloves and keep out of folks'
faces; and wash the hands on returning home. Retain some
semblance of social responsibility and sense - and carry on carrying
on.

Hahaha! I can see what's brought this on Ray. I've just added something similar, brought on by a recent trip back to my home village and a few old haunts.

Project Fear has morphed into a virus too! Us old 'uns sound like the cannon fodder but we'll see!

Respect!
