'Discovered in Translation' workshop with Susan Wicks
10.00 – 4.00 pm

Translation often involves collaboration and negotiation. This may be between the original author and translator, such as Valérie Rouzeau and Susan Wicks, or it may be between a poet who doesn't speak the language of the original and someone who provides a prose paraphrase, as in the case of Ted Hughes and poets he translated from Eastern European languages. Therefore this workshop is designed to accommodate those who don't know French (though foreign language skills and insights will be very welcome) and the writing suggestions will suit experienced writers and those who may not have written poetry before.

This workshop will look at points of contact between the writing and the translation of contemporary poetry. It will discuss some of the underlying aims and practical problems of poetry translation and think about how to use translation-inspired exercises to suggest new poems or directions in our own work.

Hosted by Poets and Players at the new International Anthony Burgess Foundation (IABF),
