Dance Upon The Edge

Come, join me at the edge but be sure bring your sharpest blade,

Whittle your wit upon this ledge, some hasty decisions must be made,

Whether to stop just short of the fall knowing how easy it is to slip,

But in this land of slippery madness the edge at least provides some grip,

And don't stand still and don't look down it's a long drop to the dark abyss,

Only by dancing the frantic macabre will we ensure our footing won't miss,

So dance with me brother, dance with me sister, out here upon the teetering brink,

Don't stop to consider the thoughts of the other, the void awaits those that think,

And we can dance at the edge of existence, the absolute ledge of insanity,

The edge of reason and resistance and stroke our peacock vanity,

We can pretend it's all under control, that we dance as master's of our fate,

Out here along the crumbling edge, the lip of the gaping mouth that awaits,

And we can laugh as others slip over and fall into the blackening deeps,

Cackle in self approving laughter and dance for it's only a fool that weeps,

And we can frantically jig at the border of all that we have ever seen,

And all there is and all there was and all that there has ever been,

Until at last all that is left is this cracked edge we dance upon,

Until all things, all life, all love, all reason and all hope is gone,

And there at last we'll realise as we gaze down upon it all,

That all that's left for us to do is close our weeping eyes and fall.

Thanks Ruth, it is true that a seem to keep going just via plain old momentum, get lost in the day to day, until something smacks you between the eyes and you can suddenly see again.

A great metaphorical account for the attitude we need to take in this uncertain thing we call life, dance our way through it!
