Write Out Loud’s Tony Walsh wins Birmingham Slam

entry picture
Congratulations to Write Out Loud regular Tony Walsh for winning the "Big Love" Valentine slam at Birmingham's Midlands Arts Centre on Friday, adding this success to his recent fantastic commissioned piece at the British Library, reported last week.
He is now picking up even more prestigious gigs on top of invitations to Warsaw and Cheltenham Literature Festival.

Tony’s talent is at last being recognised, although Lady Luck did play a part on Friday.
Arriving late as a spectator, having been told the line up was full, he found a note with his ticket offering him a slam place as someone had dropped out.
Tony tells us: “I was slotted into the final of five heats and came favourably late in the running order in each round from there. The majority of poets were going for very clever, witty pieces so I decided to switch to my more serious material, which seemed to work."
Tony held off a strong line-up of 15 poets to emerge victorious over three rounds.  “The venue, compering and audience were great and the standard was frighteningly high.  It was a real thrill to be involved in this one, let alone to win the thing!"
