Mother Goose is Loose

Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes

Have been a round a while.

Some of my favorite poems

Now and as a child.

But amidst those carefree lilts

There lie some deeper notions

That when really read and understood

Can trigger some emotions

Anger, fear, humility

Silliness and rage

Crazy stories, crazy people

Each and every page.

Lessons learned

Tried and true

Some sad, some merry, some with proof

Here's a new take on the lot....

Tick tock the hickory the clock

     Three mice without their tails

A tisket a tasket a green and purple basket

What a frightening bunch of tales

The women living in a shoe

     Lord!  she had no sole

She ground those kids up with herbs and spices

     And made a nice braciole

A cat, a dog and a jumping cow

     Over the moon...

     Really

     How?

     Eeny, meeny, miny, moe

The three men were lost at sea

And Mary would be better off

     If she weren't so contrary

     Hi ho the carrion crow

     Blackbirds in a pie

I heard Humpty Dumpty was pushed...

(the kings men didn't even try)

Wee Willie Winkle was left out in the cold

     Pease porridge in the pot

     A moldy nine days old

The bough broke and the baby woke

While the North Wind doth blow

Simple Simon met a Pie Man

And well, what do you know?!

The Knave of Hearts, he stole the tarts

And sold them for a profit

     On his way to Banbury-cross

     To meet Little Miss Muffet

Rings on her fingers, bells on her toes

     And flowers in her hair

There they met Jack and Jill

     Now the gangs all here!

So I've blogged in my 'half a pound of tuppenny rice' to add to the blackbirds baked in this pie.
Jennifer M. makes an interesting point. The Brothers Grimm were aptly named. But the difference between Horror as a genre and nursery rhymes and folktales is that their main purpose was not to promote horror but to overcome horror. ><>

Cinderella was always my favorite.

Nice one Lisa! I managed to find my old book - (it has lovely illustrations, so hadn't been thrown out), as you must have, or you went on internet. Many of them did come to a rather sticky end! If you think about it many fairy stories are rather grim too. Beauty imprisoned by The Beast - Snow White sent out to be butchered -
Cinderella working as a slave - The Sleeping Beauty in a coma for years - etc. My favourite was always Puss in Boots, as the cat was so clever, and immediately found solutions instead of moaning!!!!

Good one Lisa - I wonder to what extent the generations after us have been 'fed' on nursery rhymes? They were the first exposure to poetry for most of pre-television society. I'm sure it's from those early years we get our sense of and love for rhythm and rhyme.
Go well
