Waiting For Alison Ennis (1996)

I was sitting on the wall underneath the trees,

just before the start of school.

Trying to look cool, I was reading 1984 but not really digesting the page.

It's not long before nine and she'll be here soon.

It's not long before nine so I'm not really reading, I'm not really trying to look cool.

What I'm trying to do is contain myself.

Many others round the corner but it is not her.

Every flash of movement I abandon the page , trying to make it look so casual.

She can't know I'm waiting,

she can't know how excited I am.

And then,

there she is.

Walking and smiling. Smiling at me.

She knows I'm not reading and she's smiling at me.

I pretend to finish the line, I smile back.

I wish I had a wall to sit on now, I wish I had a book to read. Maybe she'll walk 'round the corner again.

I like the way this poem shows how we don't change at all through life! Hope over experience I guess! xx
