Hebden Burns Night

Lovers of poetry, food and/or all things Scottish are being invited to an evening of dining and entertainment in celebration of the Scotland’s beloved poet Robert Burns.

A traditional Burns Night, complete with a piper, poetry reading and a five-course Scottish menu, which will include the famous haggis ceremony, is being held at Moyles Hotel and Restaurant in Hebden Bridge on the 25th January.

With a menu that features Scottish classics such as smoked haddock broth, surf and turf, cranachan and of course, haggis, Moyles General Manager Paul Tatham says he is hoping to give guests a genuine experience of the tradition.

“It’s a chance for people to experience the Robert Burns supper in very much the traditional way,” he says.  “We’re following the tradition right down the line from the MCs, the tartans, the Scottish piper and the stabbing of the Haggis.”

The event is being hosted by Halifax residents Richard and Mary Coaten, who have a background in performing arts and have offered to lead the evening free of charge in honour of the poet.

“We’re big fans of Rabbie and this is a great opportunity to celebrate him in the best way we can and to pass on his spirit,” Richard says.  “There’s a message for us all in Robert Burns and the values that are implicit in his work, such as community, celebration and sense of humour.”

Starting at 7pm, guests will be ‘piped in’ and offered a welcome glass of whisky, which will then be followed by dinner, including the address to and stabbing of the haggis, poetry reading, singing and the traditional ‘toast to the lassies’. Guests are also being invited to bring along their favourite poem, tall tale or song – something Richard believes will enhance the experience.

“Anyone attending can come with a tall tale, a song, a story or a joke, anything really to share in the spirit of this great Scottish tradition, as there may be an opportunity to read it out,” he says. “When families gather together for it, everyone has a turn, and that’s the spirit we’d like to capture on the evening.”
