Unskew

(caff = cafe)

I have myself an Editor

My poems in a caff

And as Americans might say

My lines can give a laugh

Now thankfully America

Has come to my rescue

Without their helpful accent

My lines would sound unskew

Colin

I agree it all depends how you do it and the people you meet. Everyone has there own experiences. I was there on three separate visits 2011-2013. The first time it was all new and exciting. Finally I said been there done that. I prepare myself to pay the price advertised, If there's a tax to be added I would be happier to see it included in advertised price. Guess it's because that's what I've been used to. I'm often too critical - take what I say with a grain of salt

Thanks for taking the time to comment

Don, I have to say that I spent two months travelling around the US in 2016 and stayed with a number of Americans who generously opened up their homes and gave me a bed and a meal under the Couchsurfing scheme. With the exception of maybe one chap who was a little odd and one woman who had an annoying drawl I can honestly say I felt honoured and humbled by their hospitality. And by and large they all had a good understanding of the world beyond their borders especially in view of the fact that the UK had just voted to leave the EU and they were on the cusp of a Trump administration. I also found most people inquisitive and willing to listen and learn.

Our media is just as biased and shows an edited view of life in America and we often do not get to see the full picture, only the bad and the stereotyped. You have to get off the highway and into people's homes and heads to understand the beating heart of a nation. Surprisingly many people in America do not speak with a drawling accent and in many parts of the country the different accents can be quite beautiful - as in any country. To be honest the Aussie accent can be pretty tough on the old lugholes too.

Let's not dismiss 325 million people because of a misconceived assumption about their accents and checkout prices - no idea why the latter should cause you such distress. When were you there? I didn't notice it or if I did it didn't bother me.

Col.

Don - at least one of you is a bitter man. I'm sure the other half has only good things to say about the Yanks.

I spent several 'sessions' in the US of A as Borat would say. The first time everything was new and novel. I now have no interest in returning. Know why? I can't stand their drawl. They don't speak proper. Sorry USA WOLlers. They also have no knowledge of anything outside USA. Australia? Where's that? Price of goods never display tax added at checkout. Got my displayed money in hand. You want more?? At least with us displayed price is checkout price.

Nice to see you 'jumping' on my posts (as is Keith). Could I be starting to get a 'following' ? Thankyou for your initial advice - don't post all at once. I still see some doing it

Don ?

In the early seventies I travelled around Scandanavia by train and met quite a few Americans. One of them, on hearing I was from Britain, asked "what language y'awl speak over there?
