SLAMbassadors 2009

entry picture

Benjamin Zephaniah and Scroobius Pip join the Poetry Society and BBC Blast in celebrating some of the most outstanding young voices from around the country.

With identity as their theme, over 200 young people (aged 13 – 19) submitted videos of themselves performing their poems to the country’s leading slam poetry championship, SLAMbassadors 2009. The winners will showcase their work at Rich Mix in London this Sunday, 15 November 2009.

The Poetry Society has run the Slam for eight years, and during its centenary year decided to team up with BBC Blast, the BBC’s youth creativity service. Workshops took place in Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Sunderland, and Salford as part of the BBC Blast Tour.

Following a summer of scouring country for best in spoken word, seven 13-19 yr olds wowed judges with their verbal acrobatics. They will now take part in a masterclass with performance poet Joelle Taylor, and will perform live with Benjamin Zephaniah and Scroobius Pip.

The event is on Sunday, 15th November, 4-6pm, at Rich Mix, Bethnal Green, London
