A something New Year

a something New Year

They are letting fireworks off early
11.52
fools
what do they expect to find in 4 minutes time
that they wont find right now
another year of course
and with the same fear
but wrapped in another number
meaningless
resolution
another unfulfilled promise
that fades after 3 weeks eight days
and 4 hours
shrunken violet promises
from on the whole
the weak willed
yet so ready to drill
the ones who made success
and bang go the fireworks
bang off time
chink go the glasses
filled to the nines
the cheap Tesco glasses
the shameful Lambrini wine
the laughter, inevitable
morphs
the sound of auld lang syne

Every New Year rings in hope... it is up to each individual to make the best of their resolutions and opportunities...
Sad though that many end up celebrating blindly without the motivation to make their magic happen...

You have it expressed it well...

Really like the line 'shrunken violet promises'.

It's a great, tight poem, Peter.

Well done.

Peter,As it is true, that its just the same old same old.The fireworks are pretty.I guess its the old romantic in me, that would love to go out for dinner and dancing, then home with the one I love to ring in the new year away from crowds and loud people. It may never happen. good poem

Pete~ How brilliant of you to describe the trueness of the New Year exposition. The fireworks, the fear etc...I do respect the old song though...The "Auld Lang Syne"

GREAT POEM!!!

Happy New Year 2008!!
